A simple, quick meal that tastes like takeout but feels fresher, featuring tender chicken, crisp broccoli, and a glossy, savory-sweet sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breast or thighs, thinly sliced
  • 4 cups broccoli florets
  • 2 tablespoons neutral oil (canola, avocado, or vegetable)
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, minced
  • 2 green onions, sliced (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds (optional, for garnish)
  • Sauce:
  • 1/4 cup low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup chicken broth or water
  • 1–2 tablespoons honey or brown sugar (to taste)
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon toasted sesame oil
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch (plus 2 teaspoons water for a slurry, if mixing separately)
  • Pinch red pepper flakes or a dash of sriracha (optional)

Instructions

  1. Make the sauce. In a bowl, whisk soy sauce, broth, honey, rice vinegar, oyster sauce (if using), sesame oil, cornstarch, and red pepper flakes.
  2. Prep the ingredients. Slice chicken thin against the grain. Cut broccoli into bite-size florets. Mince garlic and ginger. Slice green onions.
  3. Sear the chicken. Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high. Add half the chicken in a single layer. Cook 2–3 minutes per side until mostly cooked. Remove and repeat with remaining chicken. Set aside.
  4. Stir-fry the broccoli. Add remaining 1 tablespoon oil. Add broccoli and cook 2 minutes, stirring. Add a splash of water, cover, and steam 1–2 minutes until crisp-tender.
  5. Add aromatics. Push broccoli to the sides. Add garlic and ginger to the center. Stir 30 seconds until fragrant. Return chicken to the pan.
  6. Sauce and thicken. Whisk the sauce again, then pour it in. Stir-fry 1–2 minutes until glossy and thick.
  7. Finish and serve. Turn off heat. Stir in green onions and sprinkle sesame seeds. Serve over rice or noodles.

Notes

Use a hot wok or skillet for best results. Avoid crowding the pan when cooking chicken.
